MID-SURFACE IDEALIZATION
MP Assistant and SmartResults
FEMAP provides a semi-automatic approach to idealize thin solid geometry
and create mid-surfaces for shell meshing. The approach combines automatic
mid-surfacing that creates most, if not all, the required mid-surfaces; plus,
special tools that speed the manual clean-up and creation of additional surfaces
required on the more complex parts.

In the example above, all mid-surfaces were created automatically; however, the eight (8) inner ribs required one additional trimming operation to complete the model.
MP Assistant combines very well with the new SmartResults capability, that applies intelligent rules to results processing in areas of geometric or material discontinuity. In the example below, the "top" first principal stress is displayed, in the upper right hand corner using a traditional display, and in the lower right hand corner using Smart Results.
In the animation above, the first stress contour represents a traditional display with all nodal results averaged. A maximum stress of about 48000 psi is predicted. In the second display, SmartResults shows a maximum stress of 61000 psi, and moreover predicts the maximum stress in a different location.
The ability to display two-sided results is also provided,
eliminating the need to consider "top" versus "bottom" locations. In
the traditional contour display only the "top" results are shown,
which actually apply to the exterior of the model. With SmartResults the
contour display correctly shows the "bottom" results on the interior
and the "top" results on the exterior.
