EFFECTIVE USE of CAD GEOMETRY

The effective use of CAD geometry persists as one of the major challenges for analysis modeling software. [Click hilighted words for more info.]

Our approach has been to integrate the two leading third party geometry engines in FEMAP, which then enables FEMAP users to access geometry in the native format from those CAD systems that use the same geometry engine. This Dual Engine Geometry ModelingTM allows direct access from a wide range of CAD systems, including AutoCAD, MicroStation Modeler, SolidDesigner, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Unigraphics and other systems that use either the ACIS or Parasolid geometry engines.

For those systems that use their own geometry engines, we presently rely on IGES trimmed surface import for CAD geometry access. Our experience indicates that some systems, such as Pro/ENGINEER and I-DEAS, provide excellent support for IGES, and thus FEMAP has had very good success in importing geometry from these systems; however, the quality of IGES support varies widely among CAD systems.

In response to difficulties with CATIA geometry in IGES format, ESP has forged a relationship with Theorem Solutions Ltd. (Theorem) in England on their CADVERTER products. With CADVERTER, users can access native CATIA geometry and convert it to Parasolid, ready for direct import to FEMAP. For information on CADVERTER you may contact your FEMAP sales representative, or Theorem directly.

In addition to accessing geometry, the idealization of geometry for analysis is also critical for effective use of geometry for analysis. FEMAP provides the ability to define regions, suppress certain types of features and build geometry directly within FEMAP.

In addition to importing ACIS, Parasolid and IGES trimmed surfaces, FEMAP also provides DXF and stereolithography (SLA) import capabilities.

Effective use of CAD geometry continues to be an important development and research area at Enterprise Software Products, Inc.
